Yesterday I visited the cutest little spot in Carrollton after I got off work. I was in the mood for something filling with a whole lot of flavor! From the moment I walked into the Island Spot I felt like I was on vacation and ready to enjoy myself! I could smell all of the yummy flavors brewing in the kitchen. I was greeted right away by two lively ladies with the cutest Jamaican accents. I sat down under this cute window with a painting of the ocean in it ..... like the water was just within walking distance. That definitely put me in the mood for a drink. They have happy hour every day from 4pm-7pm at the bar and daily drink specials. I am not too much of a fruity drink kind of woman, so I stuck with my usual Grey Goose and Cranberry. I sipped on that for a little bit and found myself dancing in my seat and singing along with every song they played! When I tell you they were jammin'...Chile!!!! It wasn't this nonsense that comes on the radio these days, it was that good music you could actually sing to and it meant something! Even another lady that was in there commented on the music. She said she didn't want to leave because they were playing all of her jams! Ha! The atmosphere was so laid back yet everyone in the place felt comfortable enough to start up conversation and enjoy a few laughs together. In the words of Erykah Badu...they can make you put your phone down...that's for sure! So after a few sips, a few laughs and a few light conversations I was ready to order.
I knew I wanted something a little sweet so I ordered some fried plantains. Fried plantains are often confused with bananas. Though they look the same, the texture and taste are very different. For my meal I ordered jerk shrimp, saffron rice and cabbage. They cook all of their meals with fresh seafood and fresh vegetables, which you can taste in each bite. I enjoyed a few more sips of my Grey Goose and cranberry, snapped a few photos of the place and not too long after, my food was heading to my table. I would say it came out in a timely manner. Some restaurants you get your food too fast... you know what I mean, where you know they just put it in the microwave or something. So fast you say "I know there is no way you really cooked that". LOL This food came out hot, but the plate wasn't, which told me it had not been sitting under a heating lamp. :) The plantains were so soft, full of flavor and just sweet enough to satisfy my sweet teeth. (Yes, teeth because I can't possibly just have one sweet tooth as much as I eat LOL) When I cut into them, you could tell they were a little juicy (exactly how I like them) and they were cooked for the right amount of time. The jerk shrimp was served in a bowl filled with jerk sauce, sauteed onions and peppers. The flavor of the jerk sauce coupled with the peppers and onions was perfect with the shrimp. The shrimp didn't taste like they were swimming in the ocean that morning, but you could tell they were fresh. Most Importantly, those shrimp were a good size! No baby shrimp for them! The saffron rice was flavor filled as well and they served a good portion of it. The texture was just right, not over or under cooked which is important because who wants hard or super soggy rice, right?! The cabbage was perfect!! I am a fan of meat in my cabbage but this cabbage has me making an exception. All of the flavors on my plate made for a happy party in my mouth, that's for sure!
I was so sad when I left because I had to snap back to reality and come to grips with the fact that I wasn't on an Island :( Between the service, the atmosphere and the food/drinks, I can guarantee I will be going back! I will most likely go back on the 1st Friday of next month to check out the live reggae band they will have. The 1st Friday of every month, they have a live band there, You should check it out!
